Organic methods of food growing and processing rely on the earth’s natural resources. Pests and weeds are managed using earth-friendly means such as beneficial insects and mechanical controls. Organic produce is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides or fumigants.
Products labeled “certified organic” have been grown and processed according to strict USDA standards. Representatives from CCOF, the organic certification trade association for California farms, annually inspect our farms, facilities, and records to ensure that:
- No synthetic chemicals have been used for at least three years
- Foods are processed using sustainable methods
- Growers and processors keep detailed records of their practices
The term “kosher” refers to foods that have been prepared in accordance with Jewish dietary laws. All fruits and vegetables are considered kosher and may be eaten freely with either dairy or meat. However, harvesting and processing procedures can potentially introduce non-kosher elements unless preventive measures are in place.
Cal-Organic Farms has received kosher certification from the Orthodox Union (OU) in New York. All of our processed carrots, including baby carrots, carrot sticks, shredded carrots and carrot chips, are kosher certified. The Orthodox Union inspects our facilities regularly. Kosher monitoring systems are set up and monitored by our Quality Assurance Division. The OU kosher-supervision label is the world’s most recognized kosher symbol and can be found on nearly 250,000 products in 68 countries around the globe.
Cal-Organic Farms knows it is important for you and your family to be confident in the safety of the produce you serve and consume. Our safety standards are among the highest in the industry. We work continuously for your safety in applying Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). This entails monthly self audits with annual third party audits. We evaluate the areas around and on our farm that could lead to possible contamination of our products. We monitor all applications made to our crops before the first seeds are sown to the last weed hoed. Your safety and confidence are of the utmost importance to us!
The safety standards of Cal-Organic are among the highest in the industry. One way we work for your safety is applying Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP). The FDA adopted this food safety program in the 1960s during the astronaut program focusing on preventing hazards that could cause food borne illnesses by applying science based controls. Cal-Organic has a HACCP program in place for you to identify potential hazards in the handling of our food. Some of the ways we do this is by analyzing the potential hazards associated with all foods, identifying critical control points in the foods production, and establishing extensive preventive measures to control all aspects of our production. We have effective record keeping documenting our HACCP system. These include records of potential hazards and its control methods, the monitoring of safety requirements, and the actions taken to correct potential problems.
In addition, we voluntarily joined the California Leafy Green Initiative, as a mechanism for verifying through mandatory government audits that farmers follow strict food safety practices for lettuce, spinach and other leafy greens. These practices are designed to reduce the sources of potential contamination on farms or into fields. Its focus is primarily on five key areas including development of a compliance plan, as well as assessments of environmental assets, water use, soil amendments and work/field practices. We believe that food safety should be a priority for every farmer. As a member of the Leafy Green Initiative, our goal is to produce safe, nutritious and delicious product that our consumers can buy with confidence.
